MDF, Spray Paint, & Plasticine Clay - Each Cube is 1’ x 1’ x 1’ - September 2022

The Therapy Cubes are a collaborative conception with the artist, Mark Gatz. These two objects stem from collaborations and connections between our practices. Each cube has our innermost thoughts and feelings from recent history, written onto these plasticine-covered cubes in a cathartic release. The cube was chosen as our location of these sentiments due to wanting to twist its rigidity in on itself, by making an object that is typically rigid into an object that is a place of emotionality and flexibility. The surface is made of plasticine clay, a never-drying oil-based clay, allowing the cubes to have several iterations and sentiments throughout time.

At that point in time, when the piece was conceptualized and created I was in a stressed head space. In 2022, I was privileged to have a plethora of opportunities regularly and towards the end of the year is when I didn’t have anything planned. There was a lot of uncertainty and scrambling as I was trying to figure out “what’s next?”. Hence, the stressed and conflicting sentiments that occupy the cube with my sentiments (cube with handwritten text).
